At the end of the 5th Century, when Theoderic had already consolidated his dominion and Arianism had become the official religion of the Court, the Arian Baptistery was built in the small square of the church of the Holy Spirit, the former Arian cathedral.
The building, octagonal in shape and with four small external apses, has sunk about 2.3 metres into the ground. Nothing remains of the various stuccos and decorations which certainly covered the internal walls. The cupola, instead, is adorned with mosaics depicting the procession of the twelve Apostles and the baptism of Christ. -

The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe rises in all its glory at a distance of 8 kilometres from the centre of Ravenna. Commissioned by archbishop Ursicino, the church was built by Julian Argentarius in 549 AD on an ancient burial area, used in the late 2nd or early 3rd century.Apparently, Saint Apollinaris – one of the first bishops of Ravenna and now patron of the city – was buried here.
The Basilica is only 400 metres from the Classis Ravenna Museum and about 2 km from the Ancient Port of Classe, with which it forms the tourist-cultural circuit of the ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK OF CLASS.

Just a few steps away from the Tomba di Dante, there is one of the most picturesque corners of our city: Cripta Rasponi and Giardini Pensili.
Cripta Rasponi is actually a small noble chapel, never intended for the family Rasponi – it is the most ancient preserved unit of the architectural complex of Palazzo Rasponi, dating back in all likelihood to the end of the 18th Century.
The most significant part of the crypt consists of the mosaic pavement, composed of various fragment, arranged in a random pattern. The pavement comes from Classe, most probably from the Church of San Severo (6th Century) and displays ornamental motifs and figures of animals, caught in spontaneous acts and livened up by the use of enamel paints
The garden, enriched by a beautiful fountain, hosts in its center a neo-Gothic tower and is also composed by a rooftop part. Getting out of the crypt, there is a staircase leading to a beautiful view of Piazza San Francesco.

The Domus of Stone Carpets is a new and extraordinary monument, one of the most significant italian archaeological sites discovered over the last few decades. The Domus is a modern framework, an undegraund space (located 3 meters below the road level) hosting the gorgeous mosaics of a magnificent Byzantine palace dating back to the 6th century AD. The exhibition area shows wonderful mosaic pavements (14) decorated with geometrical, floral and figurative patterns considered as unique. Such is the case of the “Dance of the Geniuses of the Seasons” a very rare depiction showing the geniuses dancing in a circle, and a version of the “Good Shepherd” that is completely different from any classical Christian representation. The Domus adorns Ravenna, a city declared World Heritage by UNESCO for its 5th-6th century AD monuments, of a further precious treasure, inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Italy during the events organised to celebrate the anniversary of the 1600 years of Ravenna capital of the Western Roman Empire.

The mausoleum has been included in the UNESCO list of Italian World Heritage Sites since 1996.
Built by Theodoric himself in 520 A.D. as his own burial place, the Mausoleum, entirely made of blocks of Istrian stone, is divided into two superimposed orders, both decagonal.
Above the Mausoleum stands a large monolithic dome whose dimensions are surprising: 10.76 m in diameter and 3.09 m in height. The weight, according to recent calculations, reaches 230 tons.
A niche leads to the lower order whose destination, it is presumed, was that of a cruciform chapel, originally used for liturgical services. The upper compartment is accessed through a small external staircase.
Here there is a basin of porphyry in which it is presumed that Theodoric himself was buried, whose remains were removed during the Byzantine dominion, following Justinian's edict in 561, when the mausoleum was transformed into an oratory and consecrated to Orthodox worship.
Only the lower cell of the mausoleum is accessible to people with motor disabilities.

Ticket office: Casa Dante, Via G.Da Polenta, 4 Ravenna.
The museum complex of Casa Dante and Museo Dante is a fundamental step to deepen the themes of Dante.
Casa Dante, housed in a fourteenth-century noble residence located in front of the Tomb of the Poet is a multifunctional space from which to begin the tour of the museum complex. Inside there are two exhibition halls. The first, in collaboration with the Uffizi Galleries, houses some important works on Dante’s theme. In the adjoining room, there are the collections of Dante’s Classense Library. Next to the exhibition spaces, an educational workshop for students, and a final area, the Meditative Court, a sort of ideal continuity with the Zone of Silence.
Dante Museum is just a few metres from Dante’s Tomb. An immersive journey, between history and images, to learn about the human adventure of the Poet and the Comedy. The visitor is involved with content that can be modulated according to the needs of use. An experience "emotional", and "cognitive" based on interactivity and multimedia, to tell the life and work of Dante, enriched by finds of great suggestion, including the box in which the friars hid the bones and the ark in which they were exhibited in 1865, after they were found.

The Ravenna National Museum (Museo Nazionale di Ravenna) is situated in the monumental complex of San Vitale and contains many important archaeological fragments, such as funeral steles and Roman epigraphs, and some collections of minor arts. The original part of the Museum's heritage was collected during the 18th century, thanks to the patient research and care of the erudite monks of the big abbeys of the city. Graceful Renaissance bronze statuettes, an important collection of ivory pieces, a rich collection of icons, a section of ceramic works and a fascinating collection of ancient weapons are on display on the first floor, surrounded by an elegant Benedictine architecture. Oriental marble capitals, decorated sarcophagi and other manufacts dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries are among the most prestigious finds of the Museum. The most famous manufacts are those belonging to the Early Christian and Byzantine monuments listed by Unesco as World Heritage sites, such as the transennae and the cross of San Vitale or the preparatory cartoon to the mosaic of Sant’Apollinare in Classe.
The Museum also hosts an important series of frescoes dating back to the 14th century, a masterpiece by Pietro da Rimini that was taken from the Church of Santa Chiara in Ravenna.Visit the siteweb Museo Nazionale

The name Theoderic's Palace usually refers to the architectural remains of a building overlooking the present Via di Roma. From the mid-19th century, after the chance discovery of some floor mosaics, the palace has aroused the interest of many scholars.
According to some of them, the building is the remaining part of a 7th-8th century gatehouse erected for the surveillance of the residence of the exarchs.
Other scholars believe instead that the remnants originally represented the atrium-arcade (ardica) of the former church San Salvatore ad Calchi. Sources report the existence of this place of worship and notify its almost complete demolition in 1503.

Museo Tamo Mosaico is the Museum about history of mosaic: from ancient mosaic to contemporary and it’s hosted inside the beautiful Church of S. Nicolò. This fourteenth Century Church offers a fascinating itinerary through excellent finds, many of them still unpublished. The paperboards of the great restorers, the sinopias and a space dedicated to materials, which includes the gold glass and the colourful enamels by the famous Venetian glassmaker Angelo Orsoni, introduce the visitor to the fascinating world of mosaic. The themed itinerary guides the visitor through the discovery of the secrets of mosaic: making a mosaic is not just the result of technical procedures, but also a wonderful, individual and complex artistic language, that the visitor can understand walking through the mosaics and enjoying an exemple of the typical “atelier” of the artist of mosaic.
Another section of the Museum is the so called “Mosaici tra Inferno e Paradiso” (Mosaics between Hell and Heaven) and it’sdedicated to the great poet Dante Alighieri. This section includes 21 thematic works commissioned to great Italian artists of the 1900.Visit the website Museo Tamo Mosaico
